Guilty Gear -STRIVE- is a fighting game, with real time 3D graphics, and a 2D fighting game, with real time 3D graphics. It has a number of modes, with different game play mechanics. The story mode is called “Revelations”. The story revolves around the seven deadly sins.
8 years ago, the world was introduced to Guilty Gear -STRIVE-. It was a bloody, fast-paced fighter with a roster of colorful characters that included assassins, rebels, and the odd “super hero.” Originally released on the Sega Dreamcast, the series eventually expanded to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, before arriving on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One with Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-. Now, the series returns on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a new generation of consoles, with Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- Rev 2.
Season 1 of Guilty Gear -STRIVE- REVIEW (2023)
Arc System Works just published a new installment in their flagship series, and it has been the buzz of the FGC for the last several months.
Reviews of video games
Guilty Gear -STRIVE- and its first season, which was released on June 11th, 2023, are now dominating the FGC’s online arena. Despite the controversy surrounding COVID-19, the indie fighting game has become ArcSys’ most successful product, with 500,000 copies sold across PS4, PS5, and Steam. It has even exceeded the statistics of Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 with over 30,000 active PC gamers at its peak.
Strive draws inspiration from its now-legendary predecessor, Guilty Gear Xrd, and the blockbuster hit Dragon Ball FighterZ to combine new aspects without losing its character. There are no other words to describe how wonderfully fantastic the game looks. ArcSys understands how to transform the appearance of anime fighting games, and it has done it with each of its previous releases, including this one. With flawless matches all around the world, the rewind netcode is a buttery smooth dream. Yes, this is a must-have for fighting game fans, but let’s take a closer look at what the game has to offer.
Graphics
Let me put it this way: I challenge you to find a game in any genre that looks better. There are definitely a few, but finding them will take some time. The only non-Arc System Works current fighting game I can think of that can rival in terms of animation is Arika’s Fighting EX Layer (2018). Killer Instinct (2013) and Samurai Shodown (2019) both seem promising, but not as excellent as this. The icing on the cake is that this gorgeous game uses even fewer resources than Fighting EX Layer, which PS4 and PC gamers will enjoy.
However, there was one aesthetic element that I didn’t like for. The game’s HUD and UI are both minimalistic and irritating. On the discreet and tiny side, both have a simple vibe about them. This makes it simpler to overlook and/or overlook. The combo counter and other displays, on the other hand, are massive, adding noise to the already highly detailed and frenetic fights. Perhaps this decision was intended to assist beginners get acquainted with fighting game ideas and possibilities, but I believe they went too far. You make the decision.
Music
Unlike past Guilty Gear soundtracks, Daisuke Ishiwatari, the franchise’s inventor and composer, offers a great heavy metal soundtrack with a lot more vocal performances and catchy songs you’ll be humming hours after you finish playing the game. The one drawback I see, especially for PC gamers, is that unlike prior ArcSys fighting games such as Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- and BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, the new music is not included (as an early purchase bonus). PS3 users that pre-ordered the limited edition received the soundtrack as well as various additional bonuses such as unique character colors. Strive’s primary theme is exclusively available as DLC for Steam for PC players.
Story
The narrative mode is an hours-long CGI movie, similar to Guilty Gear Xrd before it. Because of the lack of interaction seen in games like Injustice and Mortal Kombat, this has been a source of controversy. I don’t think this is a problem since, if you want to play the game, there are plenty of opportunities to simply sit and play as many matches as you want. If you’re interested in learning more about the legend, grab some popcorn and a drink because you’ve just been given a free movie!
System of the Game
Guilty Gear -STRIVE- deviates significantly from its predecessors’ model, or at least more than other games in the series. Guilty Gear II -OVERTURE- is a MOBA game, and it, along with Guilty Gear Isuka (which brought side-scrolling action to fighting games, as well as other badly implemented ideas), is not fondly remembered among the FGC (if they even know those existed at all). Strive, however, seems to be focused on becoming a fighting game with an approachable system stressing basics rather than the frenetic rushdown–combo style for which the series is renowned, rather than the frenzied rushdown–combo style for which the genre is known. Some have argued that, in comparison to prior editions, this has simplified the game, but I disagree; in this instance, different is not bad. As Roman Cancels, we’re experiencing fundamental Guilty Gear elements in a new environment. I’m certain that dedicated gamers will discover additional complexity in the game thanks to this ostensibly “simple” system, just as they did with Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s “simplified” system more than two decades ago. The changes between Street Fighter III and IV are a good comparison for the system gap between Xrd and Strive.
Another noteworthy difference in this game is the high damage hits deal, which is a high-risk, high-reward element typically associated with SNK’s Samurai Shodown series and encourages players to properly plan the footsies portion of the battle. It definitely casts the Guilty Gear heart in a different light in an exotic manner; it’s like ordering a wonderful pastor with pineapple taco instead of a fantastic suadero and longaniza taco with lime juice (both of which are trademark tacos of Mexico City).
The absence of quick kills is the most contentious element of this new game, so I kept it for last. This is something about Strive that I don’t condone or condemn; I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, we’re removing a cinematic-looking mechanism that’s been with the series from the beginning, as well as a great method to make a return by surrendering the power bar. Adding this to the high damage hits, on the other hand, would render powerful players almost unstoppable as soon as they connected their first combination.
Characters
The roster isn’t very large, but it’s also not particularly tiny by Guilty Gear standards – especially for Season 1. Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, Millia Rage, Axl Low, May, Potempkin, Chip Zanuff, and Faust are among the iconic characters that symbolize the series, as as more current fan favorites like previous final boss I-No and Ramlethal Valentine. Surprisingly, the community has embraced the new warriors, a phenomena I haven’t seen since the 1990s with characters like Street Fighter’s Akuma and Sakura. Giovanna, Nagoriyuki, and Goldlewis Dickinson have already left an indelible mark on the neighborhood. With more well-known and fresh characters on the future, Strive’s possibilities are endless! Without a doubt, the character design, match-up possibilities, and general personality of this bizarre game are all master-class in their own fields.
Player One is the winner!
I definitely don’t have the final say. You people in the G+G community, in reality, do. All I have to say is that every fighting game or Guilty Gear lover should buy this game as soon as possible, join some online battles, and have some fun!
