Lets be honest, you have spent your hard-earned money on the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. And you have spent many hours looking for the best houses in Skyrim. But after all that searching, you still have no idea which house is the best. Well, I am going to clear all your doubts and tell you which houses are the top ones.

If you buy a house in Skyrim, no matter what house it is, you will need to furnish it with furniture. The issue is that most houses do not have any furniture in them, so you need to go to the local blacksmith to make your house worth living in. But what if you did not have to? There are many houses in Skyrim that can be bought, but they all come with the same furnishings that many of the houses that are not for sale have. Which houses should you buy, if you are looking for a house that is more well-furnished and also worthy of living in?

The city of Whiterun, the capital of Skyrim, has long been considered the most important settlement in the whole game. This is because it is the home of Jarl Balgruuf the Greater, the leader of Whiterun, and his son, the new Jarl. However, there are other settlements that are also of great importance, and this list shall recognize the best of the best.

Buying a house, getting married, adopting a child are all part of the typical Skyrim experience, perhaps even more so than completing quests and side quests in the game itself.

But with so many homes to choose from, the decision won’t be easy.

While it’s obviously possible to buy multiple houses – there’s literally no limit to the number of houses you can own in Skyrim – it can be pretty tedious to maintain and keep them in order.

Not to mention that all the hassle of buying a house, which often involves a number of tasks, will take up a lot of your time.

With that in mind, we took the liberty of ranking all the houses in Skyrim. Here are some of the best houses in Skyrim that you can buy.

Why it pays to buy a house in Skyrim

Before we talk about the best homes, you’re probably wondering why it’s worth owning a home.

For most players, this is the case.

The biggest advantage of owning a house in Skyrim is the bonus of being well equipped – being able to rest and sleep in a safe and comfortable place. Even if you leave your follower and don’t want to look for him again, you can leave him at home and come back later. The same goes for your husband.

Another reason to own a house in Skyrim is the ability to store all your loot there.

God knows how tired Lydia is of all your burdens, so the least you can do is find a place to store everything and not worry that the containers will be empty soon.

Finally, some houses in Skyrim can be upgraded to include alchemy labs and arcane wizards.

Best homes in Skyrim

7. Abandoned house (Markat)

Best Houses In Skyrim: Top 7 Ranking Of Houses You Can Buy

If you’re playing Skyrim for the first time, you should definitely check out this abandoned house in Markath.

It has everything you need for your home. This includes food, clothing, weapons, a bed and enough storage space to keep your travel trophies. But that’s not the best part.

What makes this abandoned house in Markat so attractive is that it is free.

Unfortunately, you can’t technically own this house. It will be waiting for you when you need a cheap travel break, especially in the beginning. However, you cannot bring your followers and spouses here.

6. Severin Manor (Solstheim)

Best Houses In Skyrim: Top 7 Ranking Of Houses You Can Buy

Depending on who you ask, Severin Manor in Solstheim is the best or worst house you can own in Skyrim.

There are certainly strong arguments for both options.

First, Severin’s property is free, and it is fully furnished. All you have to do is complete the Cold Served quest, and Severin Manor will be yours.

But yeah, it’s in Solstheim, and that’s not the most ideal place to live in Skyrim. Also, you cannot hire a spouse, children or even a housekeeper to live there.

Severin Manor in Solstheim will be a great upgrade if you’re coming from the Abandoned House of Markat.

5. Vlindrel Hall (Markat)

Best Houses In Skyrim: Top 7 Ranking Of Houses You Can Buy

After killing the Forsworn chief and finding Hrolfdir’s shield, Markath’s Vlindrel Hall is offered for sale for the relatively low price of 8,000 gold pieces.

In return, you get a fairly large house with little furniture (and clutter), near merchants, lots of storage space, and your own foundry and alchemy lab.

Vindrell Hall is the most appropriate definition of theft of property.

At least, it should be, were it not for the fact that Markat’s architecture is known for its stairs.

A trip to Vindrell Hall in Markat would be out of date too soon, making a trip there more of a chore than a vacation.

If you really need a home and don’t carry much gold, Vlindrel Hall in Markat isn’t so bad. If you can save more money, maybe you can do yourself, your future spouse, and your children a favor and move into a larger, more comfortable home.

4. Honeyside (Riften)

Best Houses In Skyrim: Top 7 Ranking Of Houses You Can Buy

Riften’s home is one of the first homes you can get in Skyrim. It’s also pretty cheap.

Since becoming Thane of Riften is part of the first Skyrim experience, it shouldn’t take long to gain access to Honeyside, moving it higher on our list.

We also like that it’s right up against the walls of Riften, which is handy if you’re a vampire.

Conveniently located, cheap and affordable, with plenty of storage options and open to possible Arcane Enchanter upgrades, Honeyside in Riften is one of the best places in Skyrim to start a shop.

3. Hjerim (Windhelm)

Best Houses In Skyrim: Top 7 Ranking Of Houses You Can Buy

If you like haunted houses and bloody pasts, Hjerim in Windhelm is perfect for you.

Although there are no ghosts in Hjerim’s house, he has seen his share of bloodshed. It’s a missed opportunity for Bethesda to not make the house look like a haunted house.

But again, we’re picky.

Hierim’s house, which costs 12,000 gold to buy and 9,000 gold to upgrade, has just about everything you need in a house. It is well located, quite large, and has the largest armory in the game where you can display your most valuable items.

The house is also very close to other places you can visit, including the smithy and the foundry.

The only reason we placed Hjerim so low is because it doesn’t look that good. To get there, you must first complete the entire Civil War quest line (or the rescue of Fort Neuigrad if you’re on the Stormtrooper side).

2. Proudspire Manor (Solitude)

Finally, a home fit for a born dragon.

Proudspire Manor in Soliliud is the largest house in Skyrim. It’s also the most expensive: It will cost you 25,000 gold pieces to buy it and 11,000 to upgrade it.

For this money you get a large mansion with good lighting, and your own laboratory for alchemy and foundry. Add to that the fact that Soliliud has some of the best merchants in Skyrim, and you won’t get the most modest accommodations.

The only reason we put Proudspire Manor in second place is because of the price.

You can’t afford to buy 25,000 gold coins at the beginning of the game unless you’re seriously mining gold.

1. Breezehome

While Proudspire’s mansion seems like a mansion and Hjerim isn’t bad either, nothing can beat Breezehome’s simple house.

The Breezehome, available for only 5,000 gold pieces (the upgrade costs 1,800 gold pieces), can also be purchased fairly early. All you have to do is complete the Gloomy Falling Mound quest and you will be able to acquire this simple yet comfortable home.

Are there any other houses in Skyrim?

If the houses in Skyrim aren’t good enough for you, we have good news!

If you have the Hearthfire DLC expansion that comes with the Legendary Edition of the game, you can buy one of the three lots scattered around various farms in the game and build the house of your choice on them.

Unlike other Skyrim houses, here you are limited only by your budget and your imagination.

Imagine playing Minecraft, but with dragons and stuff.

Three lots are available: Heljarchen Hold in Pale Hold, Lakeview Manor in Falcreath Hold and Windstead Manor in Hjaalmarch Hold.

You can also own other houses in Skyrim, or at least move in with your spouses when you marry.

There are a total of 8 different houses in Skyrim that can be obtained this way, all of which have their unique advantages and disadvantages. But because you’re technically moving in with your spouse, you obviously don’t have the same options as if you owned your own home.

Remember, you are a Dragonborn.

The least you deserve is your own home.

What is the best house in Skyrim?

For us, Breezhome is the best house in Skyrim, but you might not agree.

The fact is that there are plenty of homes in Skyrim for every taste, preference and need. And if you don’t like the houses that Skyrim offers, you can always build them yourself!

In the grand scheme of things, it’s important to buy or build a home that can accommodate those you want to spend the rest of your life with, whether that’s a roommate or your spouse and a couple of kids.

In an open world game like Skyrim, you certainly don’t want to feel cramped.
