Marvel Studios’ next two movies, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, already have two of their most high profile superhero actors locked in for multiple films. Now, it looks like we can add another. Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in the Captain America films, has been tapped to star in Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man.

Anthony Mackie has always been an interesting character. From the start of his career, when he was cast as the Falcon, to the end of his career, he has embodied the many sides of his character, Falcon. Falcon has had many suitors over the years, but the closest would be Anthony Mackie. I think people were a little surprised when Anthony Mackie was cast in the most recent Captain America film. After all, he had his chances, but he never held down the role long enough. I think Marvel had a feeling though that he would forever be Falcon.

It’s been rumored for a while that Anthony Mackie would be taking over the role of The Falcon in Marvel’s newly announced Captain America: The Fourth, but just in case that wasn’t enough to get even the most skeptical fans on board, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has now confirmed the news.

According to Deadline’s sources, Anthony Mackie has signed a contract with Marvel Studios to appear in the fourth chapter of Captain America. The next film will be the actor’s eighth appearance as Samuel Thomas “Sam” Wilson (aka The Falcon) in a Marvel film, with his first appearance in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Mackie formally assumed the mantle of Captain America at the conclusion of the recent Disney+ limited series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so Marvel’s choice to bring him back as the famous superhero isn’t unexpected. At the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, he was also the one who received the famous star-spangled shield from the original Captain America, Steve Rogers.

In April, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a fourth Captain America picture was in the works. All that was known at the time was that Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson were writing it. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s chief writer and creator is Spellman, while one of the show’s staff writers is Musson.

It’s unclear if Sebastian Stan’s James “Bucky” Barnes (aka The Winter Soldier) will make an appearance in the film, but one thing is certain: Chris Evans will not return—at least not for Captain America 4. According to one of Deadline’s sources, Evans will indeed return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite reports to the contrary, but only for a “top-secret project.”

This is Mackie’s vehicle, according to the unofficial title, and it’s a watershed point in his career for the Juilliard-educated actor, who has been a bright light in every picture he’s starred in. That includes The Hurt Locker, 8 Mile, and The Banker, as well as his roles as Falcon, Captain America’s wingman who was hand-picked by the superhero to replace him.
