As an avid gamer, I can’t deny the power of the magic-themed franchise that is anime. While others may be tempted to pick up a pre-made magic-themed game for their consoles, this list features the best magic-themed titles available in the form of movies and series.

We all know that some anime are better than others based on the quality and stories they tell, but what about the animations? How is the quality of the animation in anime? Is there a difference between the anime and the movies? You may be surprised to know that there is a huge difference in the quality of animation in fiction, because most animations are hand drawn. While that is true, there are some anime that are produced in CGI. Regardless of the animation format, it is important that you be able to tell the difference between the quality regardless of the genre, because it will make or break your feelings on the anime.

With the release of several anime series of late and the arrival of Magic: The Gathering film, you’d almost think that Magic was the new “it” card game for anime. But in fact, anime has been making waves with Magic-themed shows for years, so why now? The answer is simple – Magic is a game that’s still popular to this day, but anime makers have been looking to attract younger audiences and to push the boundaries of their styles.

Cartoons that depict everyday life are very easy to pick up, but can also be more boring.

If I want to see a good fantasy movie, there should at least be a demon king or a fire spell.

Fortunately, magic has always been present in this medium – and has given us some truly amazing shows.

And if you’re looking for magical anime for yourself, keep scrolling to see what we’ve selected in this category.

25. Irregularly at the magic school

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

When you hear the words Magic High School, you already know what to expect.

But this show offers an interesting twist.

Here, magic is practically reduced to science, and the high school clearly divides students into those with talent and those without.

But what happens when someone who is supposedly magically incompetent suddenly starts winning?

This may seem like a harness story. But really, he just has a good head on his shoulders and decent fighting skills.

Granted, his performance is also a bit shaky – but let’s not talk about that.

24. The seven deadly sins

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

In this anime we take a journey through history and find ourselves in medieval England.

But something is not right here, for demons continue to appear everywhere, and the incarnations of God’s commandments also get involved in the battle.

Therefore, it is the task of the seven deadly sins to restore peace on earth.

The powers are all very different, Merlin is the only true mage, and the scale of the powers gets pretty crazy in the last part of the series.

If you want to see a lot of fast-paced action (as well as some surprisingly touching and grim stories), check out this series.

23. Witchcraft

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Since there’s been a storm on the internet about the great lady of Resident Evil, I’d like to offer an animated alternative.

Not only is Ayaka less likely to kill you, she has that irresistible charm that we anime fans all know and love.

And not only that: The male main character, Honoka, is a fiery witch who will do her best to protect you from the waves of enemies that come at you out of nowhere.

I think it’s clear that the Gaels have the upper hand in this fight. But if you still have doubts, take a look at his big pointy hat and you will definitely change your mind.

22. Fairy tail

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Fairy Tail is the most shonen you’ll ever see.

It’s about the excitement of the duel, the power of the nakama, and proving your worth.

The power system ranges from simple things like controlling an element to strange things like wielding spirit magic.

The cast is absolutely huge and very diverse, so you’re bound to find someone you like – and who will rightly decide that Erza is better.

In addition, the battles are quite intense and the game lasts quite long. If you’re looking for something to dive into, Fairy Tail might be the series to follow.

21. Overlord

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

I’m sure you’ve seen countless series about super strong main characters iskai.

But what if we added a real strategy to this?

You see, the main character Overlord doesn’t just want to live a normal life – he doesn’t want to destroy the world, he wants to win the allegiance of all his neighbors and expand his influence to find more people like him.

Whether it’s missions as a double agent or metagaming in certain battles, he’ll have to use everything he’s learned about the game (and his new world) to emerge victorious.

20. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, you probably have a fondness for series about female witches.

There’s something fun about a group of girls minding their own business and using their magic to save their friends and learn morals in the process.

Wait, what was that? What’s the show doing now?

Okay, I just learned that Madoka’s Magicka isn’t as useful as I first thought. In fact, it’s an action-packed series where no one is safe.

It sounds even better than the original sound I made ….

19. Black clover

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

In a world where magic is an integral part of everyday life, an unfortunate child manages to have no magical powers at all.

But that doesn’t stop his optimism – he wants to reach the top and become the Wizard King.

Although he has gained considerable strength and muscle mass, his dream seems extremely far-fetched. At least, until he gains the ability to deny the magic of others.

Black Clover follows the boy as he uses his new anti-magic weapon to destroy everyone in his path as he strives to reach the top.

It may seem like a very simple concept, but believe me, the skills become very advanced very quickly.

18. Ball Horizon

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

If you like MMOs, this anime is like a dream come true.

It starts very simply: A group of MMO players are transported to a fantasy world they have come to know and love.

However, the basics of the game are still present in the world. This means it’s important to know how to manage your cooldowns, how to juggle aggro, and how to assemble a well-chosen team.

It also has skill trees, items, classes and everything else you would need in a credible MMO.

Even politics is part of the series, giving it a realism that has long been lacking in the isekai genre.

17. The time I turned into slime

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Normally you’re not shaking in your boots when you hear you’re having a slobbering fight.

This program can make a difference.

For the said slime has the ability to absorb everything it comes in contact with and thus acquire its power.

And as you can imagine, the first creature he meets turns out to be the legendary dragon.

You can see where this is going.

Slime gains immense power and soon builds an entire village, and then a country for all the other monsters who seem to have no place to live.

Overall, this is a very interesting show with great fights that you should definitely see.

16. Magi: Labyrinth of Magic

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

If you dream of the day when Aladdin gets a full anime set and a more complete magic system, you’ll love this series.

Our main character is even named Aladdin.

And the world’s energy system comes from the dungeons that appear all over the world. Free the dungeon and you can get the power of a djinn.

You can then entrust some of your power to your friends and minions, and defeat anyone who gets in your way with a combination of Nakama power and some pretty scary action scenes.

The show is absolutely brilliant. And the prequel can also stand on its own.

I highly recommend it.

15. Familiar zero point

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

No good magic-based anime is complete without the ability to summon a companion.

Usually it is a black cat, but we have seen other variations.

But what is it, did the protagonist of this series just summon a man?

And this knowledge is also overwhelming?

And he has a talking sword that can deform people?

I must say that this series is full of surprises.

The fights can be just as unpredictable, and the large cast is quite interesting. Maybe not the best of its kind – but still worth seeing.

14. A magic clue

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Nothing was more sacred to the anime than the marriage of magic and high school.

This anime not only features a magical high school, but is also set in a science-fiction world far more advanced than what we can perceive in our own lives.

So there is already a combination of three genres here.

And the main character is considered the weakest of all because, unlike everyone else around him, he has no psychic abilities.

But he can deny the abilities of others.

And we even managed to put a little Shonen Underdog into this series.

There really is something for everyone here.

13. Mary and the Witch’s Flower

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

They say curiosity killed the cat – but in this movie, the cat is definitely involved.

It tells the story of a little girl who sees a strange cat one day and follows it to the forest, where she finds a very powerful magical flower.

The next day, the girl follows the cat again and manages to enter the witches’ academy.

As you can imagine, it was very hard to accept from the beginning.

And now she has to do her best to belong to the other witches and not become the muggle she is.

12. Trinity Seven

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Nothing scares me more than being alone.

So you can imagine how the main character of Trinity 7 felt when everyone he knew suddenly disappeared.

Not only that, but he learns that he has a special grimoire that can restore the world he lost.

When he learns of his new power, he is invited to join the Trinity Seven: a group of seven elite magicians whose goal is to restore the world.

The power system is very interesting, and the world is also top notch. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, I highly recommend checking it out (or at least the beginning to see what you think).

11. The Saga of Tanya the Bold

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

If you like anime that deals with the military, military arts, and politics, then this series will definitely be one of your favorites.

Our main character is a man who was so convinced of his atheistic position that God had to literally eze him to prove his omnipotence.

But it didn’t really work. And the main character is now a little girl with magical powers and a sharp mind to take control of the battlefield.

She soon becomes a demon on the battlefield, single-handedly defeating entire platoons. But wars are rarely won by a lone super soldier.

It’s a great show with serious moments and enough political undertones to make you feel like a master tactician.

10. Mushoku Tensei : Reincarnation of the unemployed

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Here’s an anime that can be a good example of how even simple series can be great if done right.

At first glance, it’s as simple as that:

A man dies and is reincarnated in another world set in the Middle Ages, where magic is also present.

However, the protagonist was not a teenager in his previous life, who has remained a teenager in his second life. Instead, he went from a grown man to a toddler.

With the mind of an adult, he used his formative years to learn as much as he could about the world – and hone his magical skills to a decent level.

But there are still many things that can kill him, so he must always be on standby.

A little bonus: the characters are brilliantly written and the animation is absolutely crisp.

9. Academy of Little Witches

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

It’s like My Hero Academia in the witch world.

It features many beautiful girls who all go to school and study together to become the next best witch.

It is very worthwhile, with as many cute and funny as fantastic scenes, full of imagination and magic.

We also get an underdog story, as our protagonist doesn’t have a drop of witch blood in her, but she remains determined to overcome adversity.

Little Witch Academia is an episodic game, so you can watch it whenever you feel like it.

But if you like magical places, you won’t find an episode that doesn’t entertain you.

8. Kiki Delivery Service

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

If you want to talk about something magical, just look at Studio Ghibli.

The fact that this movie came out over 30 years ago, but is still entertaining to watch, is nothing short of witchcraft.

It tells the story of a young girl who is tasked with going out into the world and becoming a full-fledged witch.

In her distress, she decides to work as a courier, using her skills as an aviator.

This is a wonderful coming-of-age story with enough magical elements to keep you on the edge of your seat.

7. Princess Arete

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

This show is like a real fairy tale.

In this book, the princess is hiding in a tower and her father plans to marry her off to a knight who will bring her a certain magical artifact.

But a wizard dares to ask: Why would I do that when I can just take them?

And with the help of his flying machine, he picks up the princess and brings her to the real world.

The princess has spent her whole life locked up in a tower, but has always been curious about the outside world – and her curiosity is so infectious that you’d like to get out yourself.

God knows, after being locked up for a while, I have every sympathy for Aretha.

6. Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Alchemy is probably one of the coolest skills.

It combines science and magic in a super balanced and fascinating system.

And if the coolest power system isn’t enough, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is also one of the best animes of all time in terms of story, characters, there’s really a lot to love here.

We follow two brothers as they try to right a wrong in their past and get back to normal.

Along the way, they encounter several people, each with their own fighting style and alchemical attributes, as well as some of the most unique villains the anime has to offer.

And yes, lots of magic, alchemical goodness.

5. Magical sisters Yoyo and Nene

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

What you have before you is a film very reminiscent of Spirited Away, in all its best appearances.

And I’m not just talking about the young protagonist and the parents turning into monsters.

No, this anime is about two sisters who use a bunch of spells to complete an impossible job in the Magic Kingdom.

But then something happens that even we couldn’t have foreseen. One of the sisters has a reversed Izekai and is sent to our world.

But not everything is like in our ordinary boring world, because the adults have turned into jelly monsters too.

Now she has to figure out how to rebuild this world and find her sister.

The art style is stunning and the film is filled with so many wonders that you feel like a kid again.

4. The Story of Braveheart

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

The history of bravery tends to escape the attention of many – and that must stop now!

This series is just an exciting and imaginative adventure.

It tells the story of a boy who doesn’t have the best cards in life: Both her parents have serious problems.

However, he is told of a world called Vision, where, if you defeat all the monsters and reach the end, one wish will come true.

So he sets off for this mysterious and magical world, determined to fix his broken home and maybe even have a few adventures.

3. Wandering Witch: Elaina’s trip

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

This show is both very typical and very different.

As the title suggests, The Wandering Witch tells the story of a young girl who has recently become a witch and decides to go on a worldly adventure.

Typical.

The tone of the story, however, is a bit different.

It’s not as dark as Puella Magica.

And not everything is as rosy as it is at Little Witch Academy.

But it’s more of a mix of the two. Some episodes will warm your heart and give you the typical optimism of a magical girl, while others show that power is a double-edged sword that can do as much damage as it can prevent.

It’s a very interesting style that keeps you on the edge of your seat and makes you think about everything presented in the story.

2. Konosuba

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Most of the series on this list are pretty serious and action oriented.

But what if you want to take it a little easier?

Then KonoSuba is exactly the right choice for you.

It’s a comedy set in a normal fantasy isekai world.

Not to mention all the great characters.

From the mage who can inflict city-level threats (but immediately fades away) to the main tank who can’t touch his own shadow, the cast is pretty disturbed.

For me, the main attraction is the lead singer, Kazuma. He’s the most believable main character I’ve seen in the Isekai series so far (and he’s one of our favorite Isekai MCs).

There is not that light of perfect, radiant morality that we usually see.

No, this man is going to hit a woman in the name of equality.

1. Old Wizard’s Bride

The Best Magic-Themed Anime To Check Out (Series + Movies) –

Scenically, this show is very distinctive and worth trying.

Instead of focusing on conventional stylistic figures like the high school or Isekai world, where it’s all about action and romance, Bride of the Ancient Magician takes a more mystical and atmospheric approach to magical storytelling.

This is the story of a girl who is sold at auction one day and bought by a wizard to become both his apprentice and his wife.

The story takes place in an extremely colorful world populated by fairies and other mystical creatures, and the overall tone is always calm with a hint of romance.

Overall, this is a very original series that should not be missed if you like magical fantasy.Magic is a pervasive force in fantasy story-telling. Mages, elves, dragons, faeries, and other magical creatures exist in every world, and many stories are based around them. But what is the best magic-themed anime to check out? For the past year, I’ve been answering that question for myself. Back in December 2016, I created the Magic Anime Project, a personal list of all the anime I felt incorporated magic in a way that was meaningful and evocative. While I often focus on fantasy, I also frequently include stories inspired by magic in my top 10 list, so it’s fun to look back at what I watched over the past year..
