I’ve been playing EVE Online since its launch in 2003, and I’ve been addicted ever since. I like other MMO games such as World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online, but I can’t stay away from EVE. EVE Online is a massive, persistent universe that’s populated by players who want to do all the things I want to do: explore, fight, trade, mine and build. I don’t want to spend my life doing the same thing every day. I want to get out there and do something else.
Recently, I’ve been searching for the “next mmorpg.” I’ve had my eyes on a few on my list of “next mmorpgs” like Archeage, Everquest Next and Guild Wars 2. Each of them has had their own unique and special qualities, but there’s one that has been what I’ve been looking for – I came across a game called “Black Desert Online” and it really gives me all the aspects I’ve been waiting for in an mmorpg.
There’s one thing that I’ve always wanted to know – what it would be like to play a game that was different from everyone else, that would have a completely unique experience. It’s something I’ve always been interested in, and something I’ve wanted to find out about for years. The mmorpg genre has been my go-to for a while, and I’ve been searching for the “next mmorpg” for quite a while. I’ve tried a few, but they always fall short of my expectations, or I’ve had issues with one aspect or another. It’s something that I’ve been dying to find out about.
I began playing mmorpgs when I was 14 years old, with Lineage 2 (which was popular in Greece for some strange reason), and found a love that devoured my soul. I had nightmares about the game, and all I wanted to do was return to it and play it every waking minute.
I discovered Tera after a few years, when I was 17, and it blew my mind. Everything about the game was simply the best: the visuals, the action combat, the skill-based pvp.
A year or two later, a buddy recommended I try Guild Wars 2, and oh my God, it had everything I’d ever wanted and more; I spent over 5000 hours in that game, and I’d done all there was to do. I stopped after two attempts. I’d run out of ideas for things to do (duh).
While I did take short pauses to explore other single-player games such as a few fps and mobas that kept my interest throughout the years, I always returned to the mmorpg I was then living in.
Since I quit playing Guild Wars 2 two years ago, I’ve felt adrift. I’d always been a member of a mmorpg environment, and I’d always had guildmates to kick the shit with, so I did what anybody would do and came here and begged for a new mmorpg, and I tried everything. Everything, I mean! Take a peek at the sidebar in the 
r/mmorpg I tried all of those games and nothing worked for me, so I gave up. There was always something that didn’t seem quite right to me. I couldn’t put my finger where it belonged, but I knew it was there.
Then, after months of failing and installing/uninstalling mmorpgs, I began to test non-mmorpg games and found that I was really having fun, but none of them were a World to live in, so it hit me. For me, there is no longer a world to live in. I’ve progressed. I have attained enlightenment. There are many options. I’m like an interdimensional being that travels from world to world and does various tasks.
So, instead of getting my kick from a single mmorpg world, I now get it from a variety of worlds and games. Do I want to play through a decent narrative, for example? Bioshock, The Last of Us, and other single-player games have taken care of this. Do you want to engage in some team-based pvp? Overwatch, Mobas, Valorant, and CS:GO all have it covered. Co-op with a group? I get my thrill from deep rock galactic…1v1 duels? I’m covered with fighting games like Tekken and Steerfighter. Do I wish to discover the rich lore of a real, breathing world? Skyrim, Witcher, and other single-player RPGs have you covered. Is there a sense of belonging in the guild? Discord has your back, and you may join several guilds. I also began streaming whatever games I play as a pastime, not to “make it huge” or anything, but just because I like having a running conversation on my screen when playing games, and it helps with the loneliness I sometimes get while playing single-player games (discord had that covered before I started streaming).
And the thing is, all of those games above only cover a small portion of mmorpg games, but they do so much better because they only have to balance one thing, and all of the dev team’s attention, budget, and effort is focused on that one aspect, whether it’s pvp, pve story, or whatever, without the limitations that mmorpg games have due to budget, servers, or balance, or whatever. And, unlike MMORPGs, which attempt to be everything to everyone and end up failing in most areas (as the saying goes, “jack of all trades, master of none”), other games typically excel at the one thing they try to offer you.
And that’s what I do now: I sit down in front of the computer and ask myself, “OK, what do I feel like playing today?” Let’s check Discord to see if any of our friends are playing anything, and then I’ll join in. I hope this, as it did for me, helps some of you recovering addicts move on.
TLDR: Instead of focusing on one mmorpg and getting all of your pve/story/progression/community/pvp/etc kick from it, play a variety of games that concentrate on only one of those things but do it better, and get your kick from there.
