Epic Games was founded in 1991 by a couple of students at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and not long after, they found themselves headed for the big time. The first thing they did was to develop a game for the Commodore Amiga, the first home computer with a 3D graphics chip, and the first home computer to run games made specifically for it. It quickly became an enormous success—the company’s three founders eventually left to pursue other projects, and the newly-formed Epic Games was forced to scale up its operations in order to keep up with demand.

Epic Games’ “Fortnite” has been a huge hit the past few months, but it hasn’t been the most profitable console game of the year: that would be Bethesda Softworks’ “Fallout 76”. As of this writing, “Fallout 76” is the top selling game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, and it’s the top selling game on the PC as well. But, as the case with many other games in the past, “Fallout 76’s” sales haven’t been nearly as profitable as “Fortnite’s”. Looking at the numbers for the two games, it appears that

Epic Games’ Publisher Purchase Program was announced at E3 2016, and despite being labelled a “pay-to-play” program, the company was fairly upfront about the fact that most of its publishers would not make money from the program. The only exception is a handful of games that have been confirmed, and these include Rocket League, Kingdom Battle, and Paragon.

Epic Made No Money from Its First Wave of Exclusives, Aside from One or Two TitlesEpic Games Store image

Due to creator and CEO Tim Sweeney’s emphasis on obtaining exclusive games for his digital distribution platform in order to rapidly and aggressively acquire market dominance over Steam and other competitors, the Epic Games Store has sparked considerable controversy since its launch almost three years ago.

While it’s no surprise that Epic has poured money into securing hot titles in the past, such as 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic shooter Exodus from the Metro, new documents reveal that the company made no money from any of its first wave of exclusives, with the exception of two—Satisfactory, an open-world factory building game from Goat Simulator developer Coffee Stain Studios, and Dauntless, a game from the creators of Dauntless.

These are the only games with a negative deficit (-0.6), implying that Epic Games earned approximately $600,000 per title. However, Dauntless appears on the list a second time with a 0.3 deficit, implying that it was yet another money loss for Epic.

[…] Epic was obviously okay with losing money on EGS (timed) exclusive games in order to develop a userbase. (However, the 2019 plan called for ‘Wave 2′ to recover 65-75 percent of advances, compared to 35-45 percent in the first wave, with another 100+ titles and a few hundred million dollars in advances.) Even with changes like lifetime EGS recoup vs. first 12 months, and lifetime exclusivity on certain games, we don’t believe it accomplished that.)
