The Resident Evil franchise is one of the most well known in the world of video games. You can probably name at least a dozen of the main characters from this popular franchise.
For the uninitiated, Resident Evil is a series of horror video games that is currently on its seventh installment. The game series started off on Playstation in 1996, and has since gone on to release for numerous consoles, as well as other platforms such as the PC and the Game Boy Color. The series is known for its psychological horror and depictions of mass murder.
Resident Evil (RE) is quickly becoming one of must-play games for fans of horror games. The story is told through the eyes of a protagonist called Leon. This character is an expert in the field of biochemistry who is sent by the government to investigate the Baker family, who have been missing for over a year. It seems that the only person who can survive in the compound is a little girl named Rebecca, who has the power to heal from injuries. The rest of the main cast consists of characters such as Carlos, who is the leader of the team, and Ada Wong, a secret agent who uses her feminine wiles to try and get in the good graces of her teammates.
Resident Evil is a survival-horror classic and one of the games that launched the genre. The franchise has come a long way since its release on the PlayStation in 1996.
Year after year it has been enriched with new games, derivatives and cartoons.
In its 25+ years of existence, Resident Evil has spawned a series of memorable characters that fans have come to love.
They are some of the most recognizable faces in the gaming world, and their influence extends from Resident Evil to series like Marvel vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros.
As a long time fan, I know exactly who I want by my side in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Let’s take a look at the best characters in the Resident Evil franchise.
15. Sheva Alomar
First appearance: Resident Evil 5 (2007)
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one in the world who liked Sheva in RE5.
Good thing I’m the one doing the ranking!
This underrated representative of the BSAA brought true cooperation to the Resident Evil franchise in the best way possible.
She’s also great as a companion controlled by an artificial intelligence and brave enough to fend off a two-foot-tall executioner with an electric bat.
On the surface, she’s one of the sexiest women on the show. Your outfits for the DLC were just amazing!
Capcom really needs to bring him back.
14. Lisa Trevor
First appearance: Resident Evil (2002)
Lisa Trevor was the daughter of the architect of the Spencer Mansion, who was murdered after construction was completed to protect his secrets.
For the sake of efficiency, the scientists who conducted the experiments on the subjects decided to silence the girl and her mother by making them guinea pigs for the Progenitor virus.
Decades later, Lisa survives as a deformed but seemingly immortal monster, on constant search for her missing mother.
We gradually learn her tragic story, through notes from the game’s investigators and even Lisa’s diary, which records her depressing deterioration into madness.
The fact that this horrible monster is a lonely, scared little girl makes it even scarier.
13. Dealers
First appearance: Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Resident Evil 4 is full of great characters that will be remembered for decades to come.
But none of them compare to Merchant.
Despite the scourge of Las Plagas, this merchant has mastered his intelligence and is able to settle in the most unlikely places, making him everyone’s best friend in the Spanish countryside.
No matter where you are, he has what you need, stranger.
12. Alexia Ashford
First appearance: Resident Evil: Code Veronica (2000)
One of the most interesting villains in the RE story is Alexia Ashford, a member of an English noble family with close ties to the infamous Umbrella Corporation.
Like Albert Wesker and the other villains in the series, Alexia was a genius consumed by her own lust for power.
She tried to elevate herself to god as a new life form with the help of the T-Veronica virus – and succeeded, at least for a while.
Unfortunately for Alexia, the stars were aligned against her.
Even God would have trouble with Wesker and the Redfield siblings at the same time.
11. Ethan Winters
First appearance: Resident Evil 7 (2017)
Fans of long-running series like Resident Evil tend to dismiss new characters without giving them a chance.
But Ethan Winters, despite gnashing of teeth, has earned a spot on that list.
Despite his lack of education, Ethan manages to reunite the Baker family and is instrumental in combating a viral fungal outbreak in the Bay Area.
He even has his arm sawed off so he can put it back on in a few minutes with gum and tape.
Wait, what?
Play Resident Evil Village if you want to see how it went.
10. Luis Cera
First appearance: Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Who can forget the sweetest Spaniard in RE4?
Louis has a great sense of fashion and a penchant for spiritual expression.
He always has a witty word ready to lighten the situation at the most tense moments of the game.
Technically, he helped Los Iluminados create bio-organic weapons like El Gigante, but it’s hard to argue with the Doomsday Cult when you’re on their turf.
His death is the saddest scene in the entire play.
9. Rebecca Chambers
First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
Some characters are interesting, some are cool – but Rebecca?
She’s just adorable.
This nurse is an unlikely survivor of the STARS Bravo team who endured the horrors of the Arkley Mountains long before Chris and Jill ever set foot in the mansion.
Despite his morbid and almost childish appearance, this doctor proved to be one of the most ingenious characters in the series.
Her ingenuity came in handy during her time at Spencer Manor, and she became a leading researcher in the field of viral epidemics.
If Resident Evil was a role-playing game, it would be a healer.
8. Barry Burton
First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
The measure of a man is what he does with his power.
And in Barry’s case, that’s what he’s doing with a .44 magnum.
This often overlooked figure was a quiet cornerstone of the STARS Alpha team.
He was in charge of gun control and made up witty jokes, such as the famous Jill Sandwich quote.
He’s one of the nicest guys in the entire series, but that doesn’t stop him from bashing zombie skulls left and right.
After that traumatic experience, Barry did his best to be a good family man – including fighting to protect them from bioterrorism as part of the BSAA.
7. HUNK
First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
HUNK is as mysterious as he is cool.
This one-man army works for Umbrella Security.
He was first introduced as a playable character in The 4th Survivor, a particularly difficult mode in RE2 where you had limited resources.
Well, HUNK doesn’t need resources.
He is cold, calculating and ruthlessly efficient when it comes to killing – zombie or not.
After the Raccoon City incident, he even invented his own style for dealing with crises.
If I had to guess, it has to do with ballet.
6. Jill Valentine
First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
I prefer to play the bad guy if I have the choice, and it was through Jill that I experienced the horrors of the Spencer Mansion and then the outbreak in Raccoon City.
Jill, who is also called (by Barry) the master of unlocking, is matched only by her courage and sense of duty.
These qualities proved crucial to her and the rest of her team coming out of the mountains of Arclay.
Her performance as a seasoned zombie survivor in the recent RE3 remake was nothing short of inspiring, and it’s a great way to remind viewers what Jill is really like after the Wesker control story in RE5.
5. Ada Wong
First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Sexy, mysterious and a little toxic, Ada Wong taught me what the term femme fatale really means.
Nothing definitive can be said about Ada Wong, other than her beauty and skill with a gun – or a crossbow.
Whoever she works for, she also works against – all for personal reasons no one knows but her.
Nevertheless, individuals and organizations in the criminal world continue to call on her for her unparalleled skills and valuable connections.
4. Chris Redfield
First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
Like the zombies he is so good at disarming, Chris keeps coming back, again and again.
After the nightmare in the Spencer’s house, Chris dedicated his life to fighting bio-organic weapons as a member of the BSAA.
Wherever the zombies emerge from their graves, Chris will be there to push them back into the ground.
And I mean that literally.
While his new grungy Resident Evil Village look is pretty cool, my favorite Chris will always be the muscular Pillar Man from RE5.
I mean, this guy can punch through volcanic rock!
3. Albert Wesker
First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
It’s impossible not to like some villains, and Albert Wesker tops the list.
He’s smart, stunningly beautiful, and can wear sunglasses indoors without looking ridiculous.
The fact that he’s so cool is no coincidence either.
Wesker is the product of a eugenics program designed to create the perfect human being.
He then became obsessed with the idea of advancing evolution by bringing about the end of humanity.
Like most great villains, he meets his end in the only way befitting a megalomaniac superman: consumed by his power, he burns in the fiery caverns of a volcano.
2. Claire Redfield
First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Chris Redfield has dedicated his life to fighting bioterrorism in the field as part of the BSAA.
However, his biggest contribution to the zombie fight was training his sister before the events of RE2.
The training must have been serious, because this seemingly ordinary girl managed to survive the outbreak and become the main villain.
She has the soul of an activist, but the skills of a soldier.
Not to mention that she’s down-to-earth and believable and goes through deep character development over the course of the series – more than any other character.
1. Leon Scott Kennedy
First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Leon S. Kennedy has been beating zombies since RE2.
But it was his appearance in RE4 that really put him in the spotlight – and saved the series from oblivion.
Between the incident in Raccoon City and his mission to rescue Ashley Graham in Spain, Leon has changed from cop to James Bond.
Now he travels the world fighting bioterrorism under the direct direction of the president.
He’s funny, smart, and good with a gun.
No wonder the girls around him swoon at the sight of Leon. Unfortunately for her, her heart stopped with Ada – and, of course, the destruction of bioterrorism.Resident Evil is an often-maligned franchise (you know you’re a true fan if you call it a “franchise”), but it’s also one of the most famous in gaming history, with a rich history of characters, weapons, and moments.
